WHO ARE THE HOOPS?
You already asked that question.

Semantics.

THE HOOPS YOU HAVE WHEN YOU’RE NOT HAVING THE HOOPS …

The Sugarants are an acoustic/electric band from the Far South Coast of New South Wales, playing mostly originals with a diverse range of covers by artists including Talking Heads, The Beatles, Crowded House, David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac.

The Sugarants are Jamie Forbes (vocals, guitar), Dean Gray (lead guitar, vocals), Nick Keeling (keyboard, vocals) John McVeity (bass, vocals) and Steve Fitzgerald (drums).

Jamie also plays with The Hoops and The Jonathan Richman Experience and works as an actor (recently appearing in Oliver! and Waiting for Godot), writer and teacher.

Dean Gray is a guitar, mandolin, dobro and pedal steel player and owner of the Wolumla School of Music. He also plays with the Kameruka Bush Orchestra, Whiskey Dram and Harvest.

Nick has played professional shows all around the world, working with Kasey Chambers, Paul Kelly, Ian Moss and Mark Gable. Nick grew up playing trombone in his home state of Texas and then earned a bachelor of Jazz at ANU studying vocals and piano. He spent the next few years touring with a rock/hip-hop band before taking up bluegrass banjo and forming the ARIA nominated band Mustered Courage in 2010.  He now runs the Merimbula School of Music, helping the next generation to fulfill their musical dreams.

Steve holds a Masters Degree in Music Performance and has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Basel Festival Orchestra and the Australian Youth Orchestra, with whom he acted as principal percussionist. He currently teaches music at Sapphire Coast Anglican College.

John is a local legend who has played with myriad bands, including Roxygen, Kitty Kat and The Band of Thieves and Shadoogie. He runs JMC Productions and is an in-demand sound engineer throughout the region.

Meet The Hoops!

WHAT IS/AND/OR ARE THE HOOPS?
The Hoops formed in 2009 after lead singer/rhythm guitarist Jamie Forbes moved back to the Bega Valley from Melbourne, where he had been playing with Buddy Holly Revival band the Crikets, doing short but interesting tours. Wanting to continue to play 50s rock and roll but not limited only to Buddy (although there is still a fair bit of Buddy, because those big glasses don’t pay for themselves), Jamie formed The Hoops with Bill Ducker, Pete White and Syd Brassington. Over 150 gigs later and having included such local legends as David Sparks, Robyn Martin, Garry Carson Jones, John McVeity, Lyndon Lewis, Dave Hibbert and even (from time to time) Frankie J. Holden, The Hoops are still rockin’, with Groovemeisters Damon Davies (stand up bass, vocals), Jonathan ‘Trapper’ Trevena (drums, vocals) and Dean Gray (lead guitar, vocals) thumpin’ out the tunes of Buddy, Chuck, Jerry, Elvis, Eddie, Bo and a whole heap of others.

Come party like it’s 1959!

The tours are shorter (Kameruka! Wyndham! Bredbo!) but even more interesting …
